The atmosphere in a game can be basically described as the creator's goal to produce an airy, mysterious, and/or creepy atmosphere that is unique. In most cases, there is no story or gameplay involved; the atmosphere itself is the game itself. This kind of game is not something you play, you experience it. I wrote a list of the 5 most atmospheric games of all time, so let’s see them.
L.A. Noire is a video game published by Rockstar Games developed by Team Bondi and released on May 17, 2011, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is set in Los Angeles during the 1940s, and players assume the role of Cole Phelps, an officer of the Los Angeles Police Department. He is investigating a series of cases.
Set in Los Angeles in 1947, the game follows Cole Phelps, a former U.S. Marine who joins the Los Angeles Police Department after returning from World War II. He becomes embroiled in a plot of murder, deception, and corruption that takes him into the depths of the Los Angeles criminal underworld.
Alien: Isolation is a survival horror video game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega exclusively for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. It is set in the same universe as the Alien film series and follows Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, as she attempts to find out what happened to her mother.
You are Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, the main protagonist of the Alien movie series. After a deep sleep of 57 years, you find yourself aboard a space station deep in the repair of a ship that is approaching a space station with your mother on it. You have to find out what happened to your mother.
A game that takes place during the end of the world, with the main character being a scientist who is investigating the cause of the apocalypse. It is a story-based game, where the player can explore the world as they please, meeting and talking to people in order to find out the cause of the apocalypse.
The game is a sort of mystery adventure game, with a very slow-moving story that takes place in a beautiful world, with a very realistic physics engine.
Half-Life 2 is an action-adventure first-person shooter game that was developed and published by Valve Corporation. The game is set in the fictional City 17. The player takes the role of Gordon Freeman, who is a scientist.
Freeman is a silent protagonist who gets involved in an alien invasion while working at a research facility. The game is played in the first-person perspective and allows the player to interact with other characters.
Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror game. It is set in the fictional Raccoon City, which has been overrun by zombies and other monsters. Players control rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield, who are attempting to escape from the city.
The player can switch between the two characters at certain points in the game, with each character having different abilities. The atmosphere of this game is scary. It almost feels like you're playing a movie. The graphics are good, the sound effects are good, the environment is great.
I love atmospheric games. They are a good challenge and fun to play. But, what are your favorite atmospheric games? What do you think makes a game atmospheric? Do you like atmospheric games, and what are your favorite? Share in the comments below.
